The University of New Mexico has identified that there was an illegal intrusion into the IT environment at the UNM School of Law on July 27. At this time, it is unconfirmed, but indicators are that it may be a ransomware attack; there are currently no specific demands.
School of Law Students, Faculty and Staff should use their @unm email account until further notice. If you need assistance accessing your @unm email account, please contact the UNM IT Service Desk at 277-5757. A support email lawhelpdesk@unm.edu has been set up for those in need of any additional Law School IT support services.
The initial focus of our response was on understanding the situation and containing it. Based on current findings we believe the issue is isolated to the School of Law and isn’t linked to other systems at UNM.
Primarily, School of Law email and file-sharing services were affected. The School of Law’s IT department and UNM’s central IT team acted immediately to disconnect services, leverage @unm.edu email accounts in place of the school’s @law.unm.edu, and transition the School of Law’s web site to the UNM web environment.
On July 30 a meeting to discuss the issue and share information was conducted with the faculty and staff of the School of Law, and information about the situation was sent to law students. We are working closely with UNM IT support to restore data and services, and will provide additional detailed information and resources on this web page to help faculty, staff and students prepare for the Fall 2023 semester.
